Pick up an extra shift
Find shifts nobody's rostered on and put your hand up for them.
When your manager has a shift with nobody on it, they can open it up to the team. If it suits you, put your hand up — first in isn't automatic, your manager still picks.

Request it, or let it go

Requesting isn't the same as getting it. Your manager sees everyone who's asked and picks one — you'll be told either way. If you're picked, the shift appears on your roster like any other.
