Can't clock in
Shiftly Me won't let you start your shift? Find the message you're seeing, why it appears, and how to fix it.
When Shiftly Me won't let you start a shift, it almost always tells you why. Find the message you're seeing below, then follow the fix.
Who this is for
Staff who clock on and off with the Shiftly Me app. If you clock on at a tablet at your venue, jump to At the venue kiosk.
Before you start
- Check you're looking at the right workplace. If you work at more than one business or location, tap the switch icon at the top left of Home and pick the one you're working at.
- Your manager can always add your hours for you if you can't clock on, so you won't lose pay for the shift. Tell them straight away.
"You are outside the clock-in-out boundary"
What you see: the Sign on window shows a map with the message "You are outside the clock-in-out boundary. Please move closer to the location." and Start shift is greyed out.
Why: your workplace only lets staff clock on within a set distance of the venue. Shiftly Me allows extra room because phone GPS is never exact, but your phone says you're further away than that.
Fix:
- Move closer to the venue, or step outside or near a window so your phone gets a clearer GPS fix.
- Close the Sign on window and tap Start shift again.
- Still getting it while you're at work? The venue's pin may be in the wrong place on the map. Tell your manager, who can move the pin or widen the boundary on the venue's Clock in boundary settings.
"We can't confirm your location precisely"
What you see: "We can't confirm your location precisely. Turn on Precise Location for Shiftly to clock in here." and Start shift is greyed out.
Why: your phone is only giving Shiftly Me a rough location, so it can't tell whether you're at work. This usually means Precise Location is turned off for the app.
Fix: open your phone's settings, find Shiftly Me, open Location, and turn on Precise Location (on Android, Use precise location). Then try Start shift again.
"We can't check your distance from your workplace"
What you see: "We can't check your distance from your workplace. Ask your manager to add its address so you can clock in here."
Why: your venue doesn't have a location pin set in Shiftly, so the app has nothing to measure your distance against. It isn't something you can fix on your phone.
Fix: ask your manager to set the venue's address and pin. Until they do, they can add your hours for you.
"Location access needed" or "Enable your location"
What you see: one of these:
- Enable your location, explaining that your employer needs location turned on so your clock-in and out locations are recorded.
- Location access needed: "Location is turned off for Shiftly. Turn it on in Settings to start this shift."
- Location services blocked, with steps to turn location back on.
- Turn on location: "Location Services are turned off. Please enable them in Settings and try again."
- Location unavailable: "Unable to get your current location. Please ensure you're in an area with GPS signal and try again."
Why: your workplace records where you clock on and off, so Shiftly Me needs your location to start a shift. Either you haven't allowed it yet, you said no before, or location is switched off for the whole phone.
Fix:
- On Enable your location, tap Continue and allow location when your phone asks.
- If you said no before, tap Open settings and set location for Shiftly Me to While Using the App. Make sure Location Services is on for the whole phone too.
- Come back to the app. On Location services blocked, tap Retry. Otherwise tap Start shift again.
Some workplaces let staff clock on from anywhere. If yours does, your location never stops you starting a shift, and none of the messages above appear.
There's no Start shift button
What you see: Home says No shifts today and "Check back later to see your shifts", or it shows a different shift from the one you're working.
Why: Home only shows today's shifts from your published roster, and only until each shift's finish time. So there's nothing to start when:
- your manager hasn't published the shift yet, or changed it and hasn't published the update,
- the shift is at a different business or location from the one you're looking at, or
- the shift's finish time has already passed.
Fix:
- Check the switch icon at the top left of Home in case you're looking at the wrong business or location.
- If you've been called in or the shift isn't there, tap Start unscheduled shift on Home, pick where you're working and your position, then confirm. Your manager approves the hours afterwards.
- To work out why a shift is missing, see My shift isn't showing.
Shiftly Me asks you to pick a job
What you see: a list headed Select a job (your workplace may use a different word, such as project or cost centre). If you close it without choosing, you see Shift not started: "Pick a job to clock in at this location."
Why: your workplace tracks every shift against a job, so it needs one before you start.
Fix: tap Start shift again and choose the job you're working on. If you see "That job isn't available here. Pick another one.", choose a different one or ask your manager which to use.
"Currently signed in to a shift and cannot sign on to another shift"
What you see: that message when you tap Start shift, or a card on Home saying You're clocked in at another business.
Why: you're still clocked on to an earlier shift. You can only be on one shift at a time.
Fix: clock off the other shift first. If the card says you're clocked in at another business, tap Go to clock out, end that shift, then come back and start this one.
"A timesheet already exists for this shift"
Why: hours for this shift are already recorded. Your manager may have added them for you, or you already clocked on and off.
Fix: check Roster → Timesheets in the app, and ask your manager if the hours there aren't right.
Can't clock off
- "Clock off from here?" You're further from work than usual. You can still tap Clock off anyway, and your manager will see where you clocked off.
- "Can't check your location" Your phone can't pinpoint you. You can still clock off, but your location won't be confirmed.
- "Can't end your shift": "This location needs a timezone. Ask your manager to add one." Your manager needs to fix the venue's settings, then you can clock off.
- "End time must be after start time. If you've just clocked on, wait a moment before clocking off." Wait a minute and try again.
- You forgot to clock off. If you're still clocked on about 40 minutes after your shift was due to finish, Shiftly sends you a reminder. If you've already left, tell your manager: they can end the shift and correct your finish time.
At the venue kiosk
If your venue has a Shiftly Kiosk tablet, you clock on by tapping your name and entering your 6-digit kiosk PIN.
- "Incorrect PIN. Try again." Check the PIN and enter it again. After several wrong tries the keypad locks for a short time and shows Too many incorrect attempts. Your PIN still works, and the keypad unlocks by itself.
- Forgot your PIN, or never set one? Tap Don't know your PIN?, or choose Send via text or Send via email on You haven't set a kiosk PIN yet, to get a temporary PIN.
- "We couldn't find you at this venue. See your manager." You're not set up to work at this venue. Your manager needs to add you.
- "You don't have a position set up at this venue. See your manager." You tried to clock on without a rostered shift, and there's no position you can work there. Your manager needs to give you one.
You can also set or change your kiosk PIN yourself in Shiftly Me under Account → Access → PIN.
For the whole kiosk routine, see Clock on and off at the venue kiosk. For every PIN message and how to get a new PIN, see Forgot your kiosk PIN, or never set one.
Still stuck?
Tell your manager what message you're seeing. They can add the hours for your shift by hand, so you're still paid for the time you worked.
