Promoting a staff member to manager

Give an active staff member manager access to the locations you choose.

You can promote an existing staff member to a manager, giving them access to manage the locations you choose — while they stay on as an employee.

Who this is for

Owners and managers using the Shiftly web platform.

Before you start

  • Open People from the main navigation.
  • The person must be active (they've completed onboarding). The promote option doesn't appear for draft, pending or already-manager staff, or for yourself.

Choose Promote to Manager

Open the action menu on an active staff member's row and select Promote to Manager.

Choose their locations

Their name and email are carried across. Tick the locations you want them to manage — they'll only have access to the ones you select — then select Promote. They're emailed a manager invite.

What changes

  • The person keeps their employment record — they're still an employee you can roster and pay, and now a manager too.
  • Their manager access is scoped to the locations you selected. You can adjust who has access from Share access — the same model covers managers you invite directly (see Sharing access).
  • If you later remove them as an employee, their manager access remains and they can still sign in — see Removing staff.
